Step by step
How to draw a floor plan in 8 steps
The same order architects use: outline first, then openings, then rooms and furniture, then the levels above. Allow 30 to 60 minutes for a small house once you have measured it.
Step 1: Measure the outside walls first
Walk the outside or the inside faces of the external walls and measure each run. Then measure door and window widths and their distance from the nearest corner. Sketch it on paper as you go.
Step 2: Pick your units and draw the walls
Choose m, cm or ft-in. Press W and click corner to corner, or press R to drag a whole room. Click any wall to type its exact length. Curved walls and round rooms are there too.
Step 3: Add doors, windows and openings
Press D, N or P and click a wall. There are 114 door and window styles, from sliding doors to sash windows, plus open pass-throughs.
Step 4: Name the rooms and check the areas
Label each room and let SpacePlanner calculate its area. Add dimension lines (I) where you want a measurement printed on the plan.
Step 5: Furnish it
Open the furniture library (B) and place kitchens, bathrooms, beds and sofas. All 193 pieces are real-world sizes, so you can check fit as you go.
Step 6: Add floors, stairs and a roof
Add a floor above or a basement below from the floor switcher. Design the stairs in the stair configurator (7 styles, with steps and landings worked out), then press Shift+R for a hip, gable, shed or flat roof.
Step 7: Check it in 3D and elevations
Switch to 3D to orbit or walk through. Open Elevation to see the north, south, east and west faces of the building with the roof and windows in place.
Step 8: Export at scale
With a free account, export a vector PDF at 1:50 or 1:100 on A4 to A0 or Letter, with a scale bar and north arrow. Or export PNG, SVG, or a 3D model.

Standard floor plan dimensions and drawing scales
The sizes that come up on almost every floor plan. US figures follow the International Residential Code (IRC). Rules differ by country and change, so check your local building code before you build.

Floor planner questions
Is this floor planner free?
Yes. Drawing a floor plan with walls, doors, windows, furniture, a roof and a 3D view is free, with no signup and nothing to download. A free account, also free, adds more floors and basements, saves plans to your account, exports files and creates share links.
How do I draw a floor plan with exact measurements?
Measure each wall, choose metres, centimetres or feet and inches, then draw with the Wall tool (W) or the Room tool (R). Click any wall and type its length. Dimension lines and room areas update as you go.
Can I add a second floor and stairs?
Yes. Add a floor above or a basement below from the floor switcher at the top of the editor. The floor below shows faintly while you draw, and the stair configurator works out the steps and landing between the two levels.
Can I add a roof?
Yes. Press Shift+R, choose to use your walls or draw the outline, then pick a hip, gable, shed, flat or pergola roof and set the pitch and overhang. The roof shows in 3D and in the elevations.
Can I export a floor plan to PDF at scale?
Yes, with a free account. Choose PDF, a paper size from A4 to A0 or Letter, and a true scale such as 1:50 or 1:100. The sheet includes a scale bar and a north arrow, and can be black and white for printing. Several floors can go on separate pages or one sheet.
Does the floor planner work on mobile?
Yes. It runs in the browser on phones and tablets as well as desktop, with a touch toolbar on small screens. For a whole house a larger screen is more comfortable.
Can I trace an existing floor plan?
Yes. With a free account, import a photo or scan of a plan, set its scale from one known length, lower its opacity and draw the walls over it.
Can I use it for building permit drawings?
SpacePlanner gives you scaled plans and elevations that are ideal for planning and for briefing an architect or builder. Most permit applications need drawings prepared or checked by a licensed professional, so check with your local authority.
