Step by step
How to plan a room layout in 6 steps
This is the order that saves the most rework: shell first, openings second, the big furniture third. It takes about 15 minutes for a typical bedroom or living room once you have the measurements.
Step 1: Measure the room
Measure each wall from corner to corner, plus the width and position of every door, window and radiator. Note the ceiling height. A laser measure is quicker, a tape is fine.
Step 2: Draw the walls to size
Press R and drag out a rectangle, or press W to draw wall by wall. Click a wall and type its length. Corners join on their own and the room area updates as you go.
Step 3: Add doors and windows
Press D for a door and N for a window, then drop them on the right wall. Door swings are drawn in full, so you can see the floor space each one takes.
Step 4: Place the largest furniture first
Open the furniture library (B) and start with the bed, sofa, dining table or desk. All 193 pieces are real-world sizes, and you can resize any of them to match what you own.
Step 5: Check the walkways
Use Measure (M) between pieces and compare the gaps with the clearance table below. If a main route is under 90 cm (36 in), move something or try a smaller piece.
Step 6: Try finishes, then view in 3D
Press F and pick from 218 finishes, including 145 photo-real textures, then switch to 3D to walk through the room. Happy with it? Make a free account to save it and export a PDF or image.

Room planner questions
Is this room planner really free?
Yes. Drawing, furnishing and viewing your room in 3D is free, with no signup and no download. A free account is only needed to save plans to your account, export files and share links. There is no paid plan you have to buy to finish your room.
Can I plan a room with exact dimensions?
Yes. Click any wall and type its length in metres, centimetres or feet and inches. Dimension lines and the room area update live, and the Measure tool (M) gives you the exact gap between any two points.
How do I draw a room to scale?
Measure each wall, then draw the room with the Room tool (R) or the Wall tool (W) and type each length. The plan is always drawn to scale on screen, and you can export it at a true scale such as 1:50 on paper from A4 to A0 or Letter.
Is it a 2D or a 3D room planner?
Both. You draw in 2D, which is the fastest way to get sizes right, and switch to 3D at any time to see the room from above or walk through it at eye height. The 3D model is generated from your 2D plan, so the two never disagree.
Does the room planner work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. It runs in any modern browser on iPhone, Android phones, iPads and tablets as well as desktop, with a touch toolbar on small screens. A larger screen is more comfortable for detailed work.
How much space should I leave around furniture?
As a rule of thumb, keep main walkways at 90 cm (36 in), leave 60 cm (24 in) beside a bed and 90 cm (36 in) behind a dining chair. The clearance table on this page lists the common ones.
Can I print or export my room plan?
Yes, with a free account. Export PNG or SVG images, or a vector PDF with a scale bar and north arrow at a true scale such as 1:50, in colour or black and white. You can also export a 3D model to open in Blender or SketchUp.
What is the difference between the room planner and the floor planner?
They are the same editor. This page focuses on getting one room right: furniture fit, clearances and finishes. The floor planner page covers whole floors and houses: several rooms, extra floors, stairs, roofs and elevations. A room you draw here can grow into a full floor plan.
